Rubber Lining for Tanks: Chemical Industry

To protect your equipment from corrosion in piping and storage tanks in the chemicals industry, you need a trusted chemical-resistant rubber tank lining.

Figuring out which chemical tank lining is best suited for your application depends upon many factors, not the least of which is chemical type, concentration and service temperature.

Here are some of the most common chemical sectors Blair Rubber Co. services:

Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) Chemical Tank Lining

Hydrochloric acid is a strong, highly corrosive acid with varying concentration levels being utilized in the marketplace.

Blair Rubber Co. is experienced in designing and processing rubber compounds for the highly corrosive environments encountered in various HCl applications.

Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid

37% is the maximum concentration level of hydrochloric acid. Blair Rubber Co’s MarflexTM PG70 is an amber, soft, high quality pure gum natural rubber lining that is designed exclusively for concentrated HCl service. PG70 is FDA compliant and has been in use with leading chemical companies for over 40 years.

Dilute Hydrochloric Acid

HCL concentrations below 30% are considered dilute and require a more robust lining that can repel water. Water will permeate pure gum natural rubber which will cause swelling and subsequent failure of the lining.

Blair Rubber continues to evolve and innovate new solutions for its customers. For example, the EnduraflexTM VE611BN 60 durometer natural rubber has a lower rate of water permeation, thus giving this natural rubber lining a longer lifespan in dilute HCl.

The Marflex HB50HT bromobutyl tank lining can offer better physical properties, better chemical resistance, lower permeability and higher temperature resistance. It is an excellent choice for acid production environments. For storage tank use, EnduraflexTM VE621BC has been highly successful.

Sulfuric Acid

Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive, strong mineral acid. There are varying degrees of concentration in sulfuric acid applications. For concentrations of 50-70%, Blair Rubber Co.’s HB50HT bromobutyl tank lining is an excellent choice. Note, at higher concentrations, it is best to avoid elevated temperatures.

For concentrations of less than 50%, chlorobutyl linings (specifically VE621BC and superior protection in chemical applications.
